For years, some of my mates in Kuala Lumpur tried to convince me that frogs really are "paddy rice chicken". The American bull frogs pictured don't look like chicken to me.

Why frogs can be a delicacy to some is beyond me. I remember watching my ex colleagues snacking on frog legs when we were in Cannes, France, and thinking: those are amphibians. They're neither fish nor reptile.

But I am sure some would regurgitate at the sight of some of my favourite dishes, which include Thai chicken leg salad and snail curry.

Of course, they are nothing compared to what my boyfriend once ate in the Phillipines: a raw egg with a half-formed chicken in it. The locals had the egg dried for three days in the sun before serving it.
