What brought me to Paris and its Latin Quarter this summer was my
will to write. But I didn't choose Paris for its Proust, Sartre or Camus. I
came because of one Englishman.
During his stay
at the Parisian Latin Quarter between 1927 and 1929, journalist
Eric Blair wrote two novels and several short stories.
All were rejected. The most famous rejection came from
T S Eliot, who commented that Blair's A Scullion's
Diary "does not appear possible as a publishing
venture".
